(Pocket-lint) - Like many products in the Asus TUF range, the Asus TUF Gaming M4 Air Mouse isn't a flashy peripheral. But that doesn't stop it from packing some of the best specs you could want from a gaming mouse into a sleek, stealthy shell.

The TUF M4 Air seemingly has it all, including a high DPI count, ultra-light shell, programmable buttons, smooth feet, and more. But what about the competition?

Slick is the name of the game

  • 400 IPS max speed, 40g acceleration, 1000Hz polling rate
  • Maximum sensitivity of 16,000 DPI (dots per inch)
  • Claimed weight 47g (we are 51g)
  • 100% Pure PTFE Low Friction Feet
  • 60 million clicks guaranteed

The TUF Gaming M4 Air was clearly designed to mean business. Like many other lightweight gaming mice before it, it was designed with a multitude of triangular holes in its shell to reduce weight. This allows Asus to claim an impressive 47g body - although we weigh it more like 51 grams, but it's still incredibly light.

On the underside, there are several PTFE ("Teflon" if you prefer) feet that ensure it's smooth and easy to throw easily on your mouse pad. The attached TUF Gaming Paracord cable is also nice and flexible and doesn't seem to weigh down the mouse or cause any tugging or tugging issues while gaming.

In terms of specifications, the TUF Gaming M4 Air is no slouch. It has a maximum of 16,000 DPI which is adjustable in four customizable levels in Asus Armory Crate . You can cycle through these levels with the button at the top behind the mouse wheel and it's easy to adjust these levels to whatever you want - whether they're super responsive for faster on-screen targeting or more meticulous for a millimeter-accurate shooting during gameplay. There is also a pop-up notification in Windows to let you know what DPI preset level you are working on.

In terms of texture, the TUF Gaming M4 Air is easy to hold thanks to this holey shell. Despite those holes, it's solidly built and doesn't feel flimsy at all. It has a reasonably large frame that fits comfortably in a larger hand and we generally found it pleasant to use.

clean the buttons

  • ASUS Antibacterial Protection
  • 3x built-in memory profiles
  • 6x tactile programmable buttons
  • IPX6 water-repellent protective coating

This mouse has six programmable buttons, two of which are located on the left side. They're not particularly large, but they're easy to get to and nice to click on.

Asus has interestingly built the TUF Gaming M4 Air with antibacterial protection which it says is able to prevent bacteria from growing on the surface of the mouse and buttons. It's certainly reassuring if you're a messy gamer who likes to game and snack at the same time.

For added peace of mind, the internal circuit board has an IPX6 water-repellent protective coating . Which means in theory that it resists even powerful jets of water, but not total immersion. So you'll be okay with spills and accidents, but don't give the mouse a bath (that problem so regular, huh?). Although Asus notes that if liquid gets on the mouse, you should let it dry for 24 hours before trying to use it again.

The combination of these - both the IP rating and the antibacterial protection - are nice additions for a mouse that some might worry about getting dirty or damaged over time. A bit of compressed air and you can easily keep it in good condition with no problem.

Simple software

In Asus' Armory Crate software, you can make a number of different changes to the basic settings. You can adjust buttons and program them with keyboard functions, macros, media playback, screen capture capabilities and more.

You can also adjust polling rate and DPI levels, as well as takeoff distance and snap angle, but for the most part that's pretty basic. That's not a bad thing though, as it's perfectly user-friendly.

You can also set different profiles and switch between them as you please, so there are plenty of possibilities for multiple games or multiple players using the same PC.

First impressions

When we first released the Asus TUF Gaming M4 Air, we were initially unimpressed. Why? The lack of RGB lighting on a honeycomb mouse is a rarity and made this gaming mouse too low profile for our needs.

But how the M4 Air has grown on us since then. With your eyes fixed on the screen instead, we found this to be a perfectly capable gaming mouse. It has decent switches, delivers great precision, all wrapped up in a comfortable, lightweight frame.

No RGB also means it's surprisingly good for the money for something so light and nimble. Which all in all makes for a great gaming mouse that doesn't break the bank. What more could you want?
